The project sought to answer the questions: "why does folate continue to create controversy, and how can a sociological approach to folate better inform scientists, policy stakeholders, CAM practitioners and the public regarding folate’s role in health and disease?". This was done by situational mapping, exploring how the different elements that make up the folate controversy relate, differ and/or exist in tension. Interviews was conducted with a variety of stakeholders. In addition, we collected a range of documents, including scientific papers and policy documents that were analysed alongside the interview transcripts. Our analyses focused on the problem-solution configurations of folate and neural tube defects.
