Work-related injury claims 2022 data collection

Reference period This release contains provisional statistics for work-related claims for injuries in the 2022 calendar year. It also includes final statistics for injuries in the 2021 calendar year. Both these are as reported by 21 June 2023. Data sources Data on claims for work-related injuries is from the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). All claims are included under the calendar year when the injury occurred. 2022 figures are provisional; final figures for 2022 will be published in 2024. Claims for fatal work-related injuries can take up to two years to be finalised. Figures for the number of full-time equivalent (FTEs) are sourced from the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) and are used to calculate incidence rates. We also refer to figures from the 2018 Census and the HLFS within the release. Comparability with previous work-related claims releases Due to various updates and revisions to the work-related claims data, we advise not to compare release publications between different years. These include: Error in claims occurring on farms In 2023, an error was found in which claims with location ‘farm’ by people with an agricultural occupation had been incorrectly excluded from work-related claims from the year 2011 onwards. This resulted in the total number of claims being underestimated by approximately 1000 – 3000 per year (0.5-1.5 percent). This data, along with associated trend series, has been corrected as part of the Injury statistics – work related claims: 2022 release. As data from Injury statistics – work related claims is then used in the Serious injury outcome indicators and Work-related injury targets at a glance releases, we recommend minor caution when using work-related injury indicators in those releases until their next release (November 2023). Error in ethnic group reporting In 2023, it was discovered that some people who are supposed to be Cook Island Māori NFD were classified as part of the 'Other' ethnic group since year 2011 which resulted in a lower number of claims made by people in the 'Pacific peoples' group, averaging around 1800 each year. This is now fixed as part of the Injury statistics – work related claims: 2022 release. Household labour force survey redevelopment The Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) was redeveloped in 2016. Due to the HLFS redevelopment, caution should be used when comparing rates from before the redevelopment with rates after the redevelopment.
