<p>The Herbert A. Mack Collection contains a 1 box, 6 folders, and 1 album with photographs, postcards, stereographs, reproduction photographs, and a painting obtained during Herbert Allen Mack's 26-year career as a corporate officer for the May Department Store Company. Included in the collection are a photograph album from a dinner honoring Morton D. May and Robert H. Levi, April 15, 1982; six oversize postcards of St. Louis scenes; 11 reproduction photographs of buildings related to the May Company, including Meier & Frank Co. in Portland, Oregon; a wood-mounted photograph of David May; six photographs of May Company corporate officers; a photograph of D. May & Co. in Irwin, CO, ca. 1879; four stereocards with images of St. Louis buildings; and a painting of a May Company corporate office.</p>
<p>The photograph album features 24 (4.5x6.5) color photographs taken at a dinner honoring Morton D. May and Robert H. Levi hosted by the May Department Store Company Board of Directors on April 15, 1982.</p>
<p>Morton D. May (1914-1983) began his career with the May Co. in 1936 as an assistant buyer for Famous-Barr Co. He later became a divisional merchandise manager for Famous-Barr, then general manager of Famous-Barr stores, and then succeeded his father, Morton J. May, as president of the consolidated May Co. in 1951. He was named to the additional position of chief executive officer in 1957, elected chairman of the May board in 1967, and each of these titles until his retirement from the company in 1972.</p>
<p>Robert H. Levi (1916-1995) started working at the Baltimore-area department store Hecht's in 1942. He rose through the ranks of the company to become the chairman and president of the Hecht Department Stores in the Baltimore-Washington area in 1955. In 1958, he negotiated the merger of Hecht's and the May Department Store Company and then served as the vice-president of the May Company and chairman of its Hecht's division until 1967.</p>
<p>The oversize postcards include images of Union Station; the Pavilion and Fountain in Forest Park; the Civil Courts Building; the Eads Bridge; a steamboat on the Mississippi River; and Washington University. The stereocards include images of the Four Courts Building; the Old Court House; St. Louis Mutual Life Insurance Co.; and the Lindell Hotel.</p>
<p>Meier & Frank was a prominent chain of department stores founded in Portland, Oregon, and later bought by The May Department Stores Company. Meier & Frank operated in the Pacific Northwest from 1857 to 2006.</p>
