Repository overview This repository consolidates every data set underlying the study“Geomagnetic disturbances and grid vulnerability: Correlating storm intensity with power-system failures’’ (Mauro A. González Figueroa, Daniel D. Herrera Acevedo, D. Sierra-Porta; 2025, under review at PLOS ONE). Objective The archive is intended to make the full analytical workflow—raw inputs, intermediate products and final aggregate tables—completely reproducible. Researchers can retrace each step of the correlation, event-study and regression analyses, or repurpose the material for independent investigations of space-weather impacts on critical infrastructure. Methodological outline Heliospheric time series (OMNI folder) Hourly, daily and annual composites of key solar-wind parameters(proton density, bulk speed, dynamic pressure, IMF components,α\alphaα/p ratio) and geomagnetic indices (Dst, SYM-H, $Kp$). Source: NASA GSFC OMNIWeb; time span 2000-01-01 → 2024-12-31. Quality flags and gap-filling notes preserved from OMNI metadata. Power-grid disturbance reports (OUTAGES folder) Original Excel files generated from DOE OE-417 annual summaries,2002-2023 inclusive. Each spreadsheet retains the DOE column layout(start time, restoration time, NERC region, event description, demandloss, customers affected, etc.). Derived event tables (AGGREGATE_DATA folder) Machine-readable CSVs in which every OE-417 record is re-classified intoone of five broad causes—Weather-related, Equipment Failure,Human Factors, Unknown, Other. The scripts performing natural-languageparsing and manual adjudication are provided in the accompanyingcode/ directory. Annual counts of geomagnetic storms by intensity (Weak … Extreme) andevent-study panels that flag ±1 d … ±4 d windows around each Dst < –50 nT onset. All transformation steps—from raw OMNI & OE-417 downloads to the cleaned,analysis-ready tables—are documented in Jupyter notebooks (pipeline_*.ipynb).
