2016年7月中国科学院海洋研究所依托于科学号科考船于南海冷泉区获得大量珍贵视频图片数据。“科学”号科考船搭载的“发现”号ROV于7月1日、2日、3日、12-20日共完成了20次下潜，其中包括8次地球物理数据采集潜次和12次设备布、原位观测和样品采集潜次，共获取影像资料578G。
