These observations were collected as part of the Infrastructure Enabled Energy Efficient Autonomous Vehicles project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The goal of this study was to determine which road weather observations relevant to automated, electric vehicles could be offloaded to the infrastructure in support of energy efficiency. A Mobile Advanced Road Weather Information Sensor (MARWIS) instrument was mounted to the AEV to collect these data alongside infrastructure-based sensors around the Kalamazoo area for a variety of case days, and the MARWIS was compared against these observations to determine whether or not the infrastructure observations were representative of the impactful weather conditions at the vehicle location. This dataset includes both atmospheric and road observations from a variety of instruments for select case study days. Not all case studies have observations from all instrumentation available. Fixed point observations include atmospheric and/or road surface parameters from the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) station at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (KAZO), the Road Weather Information System (RWIS) stations at Kalamazoo (US-131 and I-94 interchange) and Wayland, MI, and a Vaisala WXT530 sensor placed at the WMU College of Engineering and Applied Sciences campus. Mobile observations include atmospheric and road surface condition observations from the MARWIS mounted to a test vehicle and Michigan DOT (MDOT) fleet vehicles and vehicle data from the test vehicle’s Controller Area Network bus (CAN-bus).
