RESEARCH BACKGROUND
As part of the Unlimited: Designing for the Asia Pacific Triennial, Greg More was commissioned to develop an information visualization for the Make Change: Design Thinking in Action exhibition by senior curator Fleur Watson.
RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION
This visualization integrated into the exhibition design presented a macro view of world data pertaining to the 12 design case studies of the exhibition. Utilizing world data sets pertaining to issues relevant to the exhibition (eg CO2 emission, per capita health expenditure etc), the visuals presented a world view, then an isolated view of the Asia Pacific region, and finally a view of each country featuring in the exhibition. The challenge was to use data to communicate and extend an understanding of the design artefacts. The visuals were animated, each sequence following a specific theme, and the data presented not as a map but as organism-like clusters competing for space.
RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE
The Make Change: Design Thinking in Action exhibition was the showcase of the 2010 Asia Pacific Triennial, and its online presence ensured its international accessibility.
