This project aims to uncover the genetic basis for the acquisition of cyclotide biosynthesis in the Solanaceae. The family has several economically important crops and cyclotides are gene-encoded stable peptides that could find uses as pharmaceuticals or in plant protection, thus this research may open avenues to crop improvement or the creation of value-added Solanaceae crops.
