Researchers selected a synthetic medium to both accelerate benzene degradation and promote the growth of benzene-degrading microorganisms by enrichment cultures under methanogenic conditions. A syntrophic interaction of benzene-degrading microorganisms under methanogenic conditions is possibly required for benzene mineralization. A correlation analysis of longitudinal samples of microbial communities were implemented to reveal this syntrophic relationship.
