In 2017, approximately 27 percent of home policies were written directly with the insurer. The largest share of home policies, 34 percent, however, were done through intermediaries. Home insurance provides protection against risks to property such as water and leakage damage, fire and explosion, theft and other. Having property insurance in the UK is optional but it is often contractually required in case of a mortgage.
