Relationship between the mating date and female age, male age and male dominance rank.

Results of the models investigating the effect of female age (log term), male age (linear term) and male dominance rank (log term) on the dates of matings. The date of matings depended on female age, male age and male dominance rank. The model selection procedure favours male age and dominance rank as the factors more strongly correlated with mating date. The model including female age is more weakly supported by the data.The fit of the models was assessed by R2 and Akaike's information criterion (AIC). The best model is indicated in bold. R2 is calculated using the sample size (n), the standard log-likelihood of the model (logLM, which includes fixed and random effects) and the standard log-likelihood of the intercept-only model (logL0). ΔAIC gives the difference in AIC between each model and the best model. The three models also incorporated the number of matings each day as a covariate and individual identity (females for model a and males for models b and c) nested within year of observation.
