The present invention provides a method or the like for producing a culture medium composition which involves removing， in advance， divalent metal cations included in a polymer compound which has an anionic functional group， preparing a dried powder of the polymer compound， and mixing the dried powder with a culture medium. Furthermore， the present invention provides a method for refining a polymer compound having an anionic functional group， the method being characterized by obtaining a polymer compound having an anionic functional group and having a reduced divalent metal cation content included therein， by mixing: an aqueous suspension of a polymer compound having an anionic functional group; and a cation exchanger for exchanging a divalent metal cation for a univalent metal cation.
