This dataset comprises of the data presented in the publication "Rotating one's head modulates the perceived velocity of motion aftereffect" (Bai et al., 2020) and the codes for data analyses.For the study, we designed a custom VR equipment with a head-mounted display and a motion sensor fastened to a helmet, which could collect real-time data of the observer's movement and deliver it to the computer instantly, thus helping us manipulate the visual stimuli to present according to the profile of the observer's self-motion.A pair of gratings horizontally drifting in opposite directions (i.e. leftward and rightward) were presented to observers via the VR equipment as the visual motion adapter to induce a motion aftereffect (MAE). The moment the gratings stopped drifting, observers started immediately performing a yaw head rotation (leftward of rightward), during which they experienced MAEs (drifting gratings which were actually stationary now). Because the two gratings just drifted oppositely, the MAEs they induced were also opposite, with one in the same direction as and the other in the opposite direction to the head rotation. Observers had to report which of the gratings seemed faster (2AFC task). In other conditions, observers were required to rotate their heads when watching real visual motions (i.e. actually drifting gratings) at different speeds instead of the illusionary MAE, and performed the same 2AFC task as above. Comparing observers' performances with the control conditions where they did not rotate their head and kept still, we tried to investigate the effect of yaw head rotation on the perceived velocity of MAE, and contrast it to its effect on the perceived velocity of real motion.For details of the dataset, please see readme.txt in the root directory after unzipping.
