Compiled list of public tornado shelters across the United States. The different colored circles represent the following: *Red - Shelter inside fire station *Dark blue - Shelter inside police station *Purple - Shelter in other building (such as a school or conference center), capacity <800 or unknown *Blue - Shelter in other building (such as a dome, conference center or gymnasium), capacity 800+ *Green - Free-standing shelter, capacity 50+ *Lime - Free-standing shelter, capacity <50 *Yellow - Underground free-standing shelter, likely not wheelchair accessible *Orange - Shelter only accessible to highway traffic *Brown - Shelter in state or federal park land Remember, make sure you have ample time to go to the shelter!! Once the tornado warning is issued, it is likely too late. They will not always open and policies are up to local officials, so make sure they are open first. Map is subject to change without notice.
