The German Internet Panel (GIP) is a long-term study at the University of Mannheim. The GIP examines individual attitudes and preferences that are relevant in political and economic decision-making processes. To this end, more than 3,500 people throughout Germany have been regularly surveyed online every two months since 2012 on a wide range of topics. The GIP is based on a random sample of the general population in Germany between the ages of 16 and 75. The study started in 2012 and was supplemented by new participants in 2014 and 2018. The panel participants were recruited offline. The GIP questionnaires cover a variety of topics that deal with current events.<br>The questionnaire contains numerous experimental variations in the survey instruments. Further information can be found in the study documentation. Employment status; importance of own work; appreciation of own person at work; feeling of inferiority at work; number of different statements agreed with (I know who I can turn to if I have questions in everyday working life, there is a good working atmosphere in my working environment, criticism should be allowed to be voiced at work, there is racial discrimination at my workplace); number of different statements agreed with (public broadcasting fees benefit democracy, we would all be better off if we ate less meat, certain ethnic groups are naturally less intelligent than others, high salaries for managers are justified); number of different statements agreed with (it is okay to use violence for some political goals, harsher penalties for crime should be introduced in Germany, drink driving is not a small thing, it is understandable that some people evade taxes); advocating acquittal for various fictitious offences (removing election posters of selected parties, throwing stones at participants of a peaceful rally of selected parties, arson at the local party headquarters of a selected party, driving a car into a rally of selected parties resulting in serious injuries); approval of selected statements (there is racial discrimination at my workplace, certain ethnic groups are naturally less intelligent than others, it is okay to use violence for some political goals). Body image: Satisfaction with own body (face, hair, lower body, mid-torso, upper body, muscle tone, weight, height, overall appearance); approval of selcted statements about own body (is sexually appealing, respondent likes own appearance, other people find respondent good looking, respondent likes appearance of own body without clothes, respondent likes fit of own clothes, respondent does not like own stature, respondent is physically unattractive); approval of statements about own appearance (pay attention to own appearance before going out with people; buying clothes that make one look one´s best; checking own appearance in the mirror whenever possible; spending a lot of time getting ready before going out; importance of always looking good; using very few grooming products; feeling insecure if own appearance is not correct; not caring about own appearance when dressing; being indifferent to other people´s opinions about own appearance; putting a lot of effort into hair styling; never thinking about own appearance; constantly trying to improve own physical appearance). Demography: sex; age (year of birth, categorized); highest level of education; highest level of professional education; marital status; household size; employment status; German citizenship; frequency of private Internet use; federal state. Additionally coded were: respondent ID, GIP; household ID, GIP; person ID (within household); year of recruitment (2012, 2014, 2018); interview date; current online status; assignment to experimental groups. Questionnaire evaluation (interesting, varied, relevant, long, difficult, too personal); overall assessment of the survey; respondent made further comments on the questionnaire.
