Wave Propagation over a Submerged Bar: Datasets from Wave Flume Experiments and CFD

Datasets generated by physical wave flume experiments as well as numerical models using CFD on wave propagation over a submerged bar are supplied in the present repository. Experiments dedicated to the benchmarking of numerical models were carried out in the wave flume in the Ocean and Coastal Engineering Laboratory at Aalborg University, Denmark. Data from the experiments were used for the benchmarking of three Navier-Stokes solvers from widespread CFD frameworks with fundamentally different free surface treatments, i.e., the VoF-based interFoam solver of OpenFOAM, the sigmatransformation solver of MIKE 3 Waves Model FM, and the delta-SPH solver of DualSPHysics. The different solvers were used to set up three numerical models referred to as ’i-VoF’, ‘M-sigma’, and ‘D-SPH’, respectively, and detailed in the source paper. Wave transformations were investigated under four wave conditions (WCs): WCs 1-3 were regular waves with increasing nonlinearity and WC 3 included wave-breaking; WC 4 was a bichromatic wave with wave-breaking. In the source paper, an idealized testcase was formulated for simple and accurate test representation – convenient to adopt by others in benchmarking/validation of numerical models with similar complex wave transformation.
