This study investigates the critical interplay between basal brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity, assessed via infrared thermography, and exercise modality on energy expenditure and substrate oxidation kinetics in trained individuals. Our work directly aligns with the scope of your journal by utilizing thermal imaging as a primary, non-invasive tool for physiological assessment and exploring its implications in exercise thermogenesis.The key findings of our crossover study demonstrate that individuals with high BAT activity exhibit a significantly greater total energy expenditure (+25%) and enhanced late-exercise lipid oxidation, with high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) eliciting the most robust metabolic effects. To our knowledge, this is the first study to employ polynomial regression modeling to characterize the temporal kinetics of these metabolic responses while stratifying participants based on their basal BAT activity.
