Dataset from the study <b>The Impact of Listening on Post-Discharge Outcomes </b><b>After Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Hospitalization </b>by Ben Cooley Hall and Josephine Ridley (not yet published; currently submitted for consideration).<b>Abstract</b><i><b>Objective:</b></i> The purpose of this study was to explore whether people’s experience of feeling genuinely listened to, and by whom, during inpatient psychiatric hospitalization had an impact on post-discharge outcomes, including patient satisfaction, post-discharge distress, length of stay, rate of readmission, and post-discharge treatment adherence. <i><b>Methods:</b></i><b> </b>Eligible subjects (<i>N</i>=326)—people who were hospitalized in the psychiatric inpatient unit of a large, urban, US veterans’ hospital between May 1, 2016, and December 31, 2016—were mailed consent forms and questionnaire packets, including the APHES (<i>Acute Hospitalization Experiences Survey</i>), Pat-UKU-ConSat (<i>Consumer Satisfaction Rating Scale: Self-Assessment Form</i>), ISMI (<i>Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness</i> scale), and BDI-2 (<i>Beck Depression Inventory</i>). Forty-three people returned completed or partially completed packets and were included in the study. This sample was representative of the larger pool in all respects except that people diagnosed with schizophrenia or personality disorders were slightly underrepresented. <i><b>Results:</b></i><b> </b>Participants’ experience of having felt genuinely listened to during hospitalization—especially by psychiatrists and psychologists—was found to be highly correlated (.756; p&lt;.001) with patient satisfaction but not with any other outcomes that were measured. This correlation was not moderated either by participants’ diagnoses or by their pre-existing attitudes about mental health care. <i><b>Conclusions and Implications for Practice: </b></i>The implication of this finding is that prioritizing genuine listening could significantly improve people’s satisfaction with their inpatient psychiatric care. Further research is needed to determine specific practices most likely to ensure this experience of feeling genuinely listened to.
