Experimental Design

The Pan Trap datasets were collected on October 27, 2014 between the hours of 3:00pm and 4:00pm. The location was at the York University Keele Campus located in Toronto, Ontario in both a disturbed area (baseball diamond) and a grassland. At the onset of the lab, the researchers laid out three 1m x 1m quadrants in the grassland and in the disturbed area. These quadrants were spaced approximately 3m apart from each other in all directions. Inside each quadrant there were three plastic bowls - yellow, blue, and white. Each bowl was filled with 2 inches of soapy water. After this was set up, the researchers counted the number of plants within each quadrants. After approximately an hour, the researchers returned to the sites and counted the number of different insects and the different types of insects within each pan trap and quadrant. After the observation, the soapy water was disposed of and the bowls were collected.
