Intestinal barrier function in the colon of irritable bowel syndrome patients and healthy subjects pre- and post-butyrate exposure in vivo

The dataset comprises information (age, sex, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-subtype and medical information) about 17 IBS patients and 17 healthy subjects and their gastrointestinal problems assessed by GSRS-IBS questionnaires. Additionally, it includes data about the intestinal permeability (passage of intestinal permeability markers fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), and transepithelial resistance measured by Ussing chamber experiments) and ion transport (short circuit current measured by Ussing chamber experiments) of colonic biopsies collected from these 34 study participants pre- and post-exposure to butyrate in vivo.
