Greater microbial biomass does not necessarily lead to higher microbial respiration within seasons

While conventional models assume a positive correlation between microbial biomass and respiration at the interannual scale, the seasonal synchrony between these two components remains poorly understood. Here, we analyzed seasonal data from 324 forest and grassland studies to assess the synchrony between microbial biomass carbon and respiration, and used site-level experiments to determine the underlying mechanisms.
