Analysis of genes involved in the oxidation of arsenic detected in the genome of the sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, strain M52. The genes are homologs to the newly identified arx genes that encode for a poorly characterized arsenite oxidize. The strain M52 was isolated from a microbial mat developing in an inclined concrete wall with overflowing hot spring water, in Jozankei, Hokkaido. Strain M52 is capable of oxidizing the arsenite.
