Anaerobic degradation of naphthalene and pyrene by sulfate-reducing cultures enriched from former manufactured gas plant soil

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under anaerobic sulfate-reducing conditions is an energetically challenging process. In this project, we attempted enrichment of PAHs degrading strictly anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria from a long-term contaminated former manufactured gas plant soil.
