Vanishing River Volume 4: Chapter 06: Yavapai and Western Apache Archaeology of Central Arizona

This chapter reviews archaeological evidence for Yavapai and Western Apache occupation of central Arizona. Whittlesey begins with a description of the only site – Site 66//1157 -- in the LVAP project area to present clearly identified Yavapai or Western Apache material culture. She also discusses the archaeological data from the Yavapai construction camps at Bartlett and Horseshoe Dams. Whittlesey then provides an overview of archaeological evidence for Yavapai and for Western Apache archaeology in places surrounding the LVAP project area. Reid offers a description of a wickiup uncovered at the Grasshopper site, and uses chronologic samples taken from the structure to discuss Apachean entry into central Arizona. Deaver then presents a critical review on the dating of the Protohistoric and Historic periods in central Arizona. He is concerned with evaluating limited chronologic evidence for Protohistoric and/or Historic contexts in the LVAP project area. Finally, Whittlesey provides a summary of known material data that might be used to identify Yavapai and Western Apache in the archaeological record.
