Digitised fragment bindings at the University Library of Southern Denmark

This dataset contains images of 38 books held by the University Library of Southern Denmark. These books were selected for digitisation because their bindings are made of fragments of medieval manuscripts or early printed books, an important corpus of material for studying the medieval Latin heritage of Northern Europe. Images of the fragments and relevant parts of their host volumes were for the most part acquired with a resolution of 300 dpi using different techniques: visible light (all items), infrared-reflected imaging (relevant items only), and hyperspectral imaging (relevant items only). The images were acquired with a Canon EOS 800D camera, modified for the UV-VIS-IR range, using Elio halogen lights and the Robertina filter set produced by Cultural Heritage Open Source. The images were processed with RawTherapee. The hyperspectral data were captured using Newtec's hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system, Buteo, which employs the Oculus Vis-NIR camera. This camera captures a spectral range of 430–1000 nm and provides a spatial sampling swath of 1840 pixels. Since a full-scale digitisation of every page of each item would have cost more time and resources than available, partial digitisation was carried out. The following parts of each item were photographed: Covers (front and back) Spine Title page, incipit, and/or colophon Any pages with provenance information Of one item, only the outside of the covers was photographed due to the fragile state of the binding (Herlufsholm 671.2).
