Smart Insider's Buyback Data is global covering over 58 markets, with a historical coverage back to 2014.
When companies repurchase their own stock (commonly known as a buyback) they reduce the number of shares available to other investors. Limiting the supply in this way increases the price of the remaining stock under normal conditions of supply and demand.
At a company level, through the process of aggregation, buyback data allows sophisticated investors to gain profitable insight.
Our analysts process the detail of every buyback trade reported in every market globally each day. Many issuers (companies), particularly those with a large market cap, action trades almost daily so monitoring each and every trade has little value as an investment signal. So, analysing the patterns of executed buyback trades is one way to anticipate the future, our historic data gives clients the tools to do that.
Another way is to monitor announcements made by issuers which state their intentions to Buyback stock. These announcements can vary, they do not always detail the exact amount or value of shares to be bought back, may contain conditions, and may not be carried out as intended.
As such, they are intentions rather than firm commitments. We call this data ‘Buyback Intentions and Authorisations’ and it forms part of our Buyback product.
Our analysts monitor and report every announcement, processing it into a machine readable format that is easier for our clients to ingest; either through quant methods or Desktop delivery. We inform clients of what is likely to happen as well as what has already occurred.
Numerous filters can be applied to the data to analyse by sector, market, index, or even clients’ individual portfolios. This can offer valuable tools to macro analysts and CIO’s. This data is most useful when studied historically. Our time series reports make it easy to identify the relevant trends and changes associated with share buybacks.

Table:
