A novel regulative mechanism of bacterial photosynthesis allows Sediminicoccus rosea KRV36, an arctic strain of Aerobic Anoxygenic Phototroph, to synthetize bacteriochlorophyll, express genes of the Photosynthetic Gene Cluster, and assemble functional type II photosynthetic complexes under continuous light in the presence of oxygen. This adaptive mechanism provides advantage to the phototroph under the conditions of long polar summer. Understanding the molecular basis of this unique ability will open new possibilities for genetic engineering of biotechnologically relevant phototrophs, with the aim to increase their tolerance to reactive oxygen species.
