Outlined are comparisons within each of the major clades for which background similarity and niche equivalency tests were conducted. Species pairs with environmental backgrounds more similar than expected by chance in both directions are indicated by a superscript S. Comparisons that were significant in one direction are denoted by an asterisk (*). Only 2 of 64 comparisons had equivalent niches and are denoted by superscript E.
