Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU)

Norwegian Institute for Air Research, NILU, is an independent research institute founded in 1969. The institute conducts environmental research with emphasis on the sources of airborne pollution, atmospheric transport, transformation and deposition and is also involved in the assessment of the effects of pollution on ecosystems, human health and materials. A main priority for NILU is to provide scientific facts on the quantitative relationships between these factors, and at the same time make the results available in user friendly manners for decision-makers. NILU in The Polar Environmental Centre Background. In 1994 the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) established a department in Troms. The department is one of several institutions in the Polar Environmental Centre. The main areas of research for the department in Troms are connected to environmental problems in the Polar areas and the Barents region. NILU in the Polar Environmental Centre has focussed the research on following themes: Ecotoxicology and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), local air pollution in the northern areas, and ozone and UV-radiation in the Arctic.
