Sustainable Access to Sports and Outdoors Facilities

This database contains a collection of GeoPackages developed as part of a national project aimed at visualizing accessibility to sports and outdoor recreation facilities across Sweden, alongside a corresponding sustainability index (Sustainable Access to Sports and Outdoors Facilities Platform). Accessibility was assessed using various transport modes—walking, cycling, car, and public transport—from origin points (weighted population centroids) to destinations representing the most popular activities in Sweden. These include: football, other ball sports, ice hockey, gymnastics, fitness at a center, swimming in a pool, horse riding, athletics, martial arts, golf, tennis, playgrounds, walking and/or running outdoors, outdoor swimming, picnicking, dog parks, outdoor gyms, and disc golf. The origins and destinations used in the analysis are provided in the origins and destinations GeoPackages. Results include travel time to each activity and the percentage of the population with access to them. These are available at three travel time thresholds—15, 30, and 60 minutes—and are presented both by origin grid cell and aggregated by RegSO (regional statistical area) and city using the median. These datasets can be found in the GeoPackages travel_time_to_activities and population_percentage_access. A sustainability index was also developed to compare travel times by sustainable modes (walking, cycling, and public transport) to travel times by car. This index captures the relative performance of sustainable transport in providing access to activities. Results are provided at the grid level and aggregated by RegSO and city, using the median of the population distribution. The corresponding data are available in the sustainability_index GeoPackage.
