There is a need for systems to more efficiently produce long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), such as docosapentacnoic acid (DPA), in recombinant cells. The present invention provides recombinant cells, such as plant cells, comprising an exogenous .DELTA.5 elongase which has activity on eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to produce DPA with an efficiency of conversion of at least 70%. Due to the many known health benefits of LC-PUFAs, cells of the invention, or oil and/or fatty acids extracted from these cells, can be used for a variety of purposes such as in feedstuffs and nutraceuticals.
