The impact of museum preservation on the gut microbiome of vertebrates

In this study we compared the gut microbiome 11 vertebrate species between samples collected from freshly dissected individuals or from individuals that were fluid-preserved for one year. In a subset of species, we also collected gut microbiome samples from historical specimens in a natural history museum collection. In another subset of samples, we compared three commercial DNA extraction methods using each sample type.
