The goal is to better understand the microbial profile of hospitalized patients with complicated parapneumonic effusions and empyema and to evaluate whether antimicrobial selection would differ if guided by targeted metagenomic sequencing plus conventional cultures versus conventional cultures alone. Pleural fluid was collected from hospitalized patients that were referred for diagnostic thoracentesis.
