资源简介:
Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to May 2023. Participants were Thai males aged 20-50 diagnosed with infertility at Thammasat University Hospital. Following informed consent, participants were categorized into two groups based on WHO 2021 criteria for semen analysis: Normospermia (NS) and Oligozoospermia (OS). Prolactin levels were assessed through blood tests. Demographic and laboratory data were statistically compared between groups.
Results:
The study included 48 NS and 24 OS participants. No significant differences were found in demographic data, socioeconomic status, or medical histories between the groups. None of the participants reported symptoms typically associated with hyperprolactinemia. Although OS participants were slightly older (39.7 vs. 36.9 years, p = 0.05) with marginally higher BMI (27.97 vs. 25.32, p = 0.055), these differences were not statistically significant. Spouses ages were similar between groups. The duration of unprotected sexual intercourse without conception was significantly longer in the OS group (5.5 years vs. 2 years, p = 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference in mean serum prolactin levels between the groups (10.86 ng/mL in OS vs. 9.41 ng/mL in NS, p = 0.118).
Conclusion: The study found no significant correlation between serum prolactin levels and sperm abnormalities, such as oligozoospermia, in infertile males. The extended period of unprotected intercourse in the OS group points to the impact of sperm quality on fertility, suggesting the presence of other factors contributing to infertility.
