Deep-sea mussels belonging to the genus Bathymodiolus could have evolved intracellular symbiosis in gill cells called bacteriocytes. They are assumed to acquire their symbiont into the vacuoles (symbiosomes) of bacteriocytes from the environment. We investigated the genomic heterogeneity in an endosymbiont population of Bathymodiolus septemdierum using amplicon analysis of multiple genes.
