To understand the formation of virulence in D. noxia to resistant T. aestivum cultivars, a virulent D. noxia biotype, SAMv2 (South African mutant 2) was created in the lab by exposing the avirulent South African biotype SA1 on a T. aestivum cultivar containing the Dn7 resistance gene over a period of 3 months. We investigated the differential transcriptional regulation between SAMv2, its avirulent progenitor, SA1 and the most virulent field biotype, SA5, before and six hour after transferring the aphids from a susceptible T. aestivum cultivar (Gamtoos) to a resistant near-isogenic line containing Dn7. The transcriptional regulation of T. aestivum fed on by the different D. noxia biotypes was also investigated.
