Picochlorum renovo was isolated and characterized at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO, USA. It is closely related to Picochlorum sp. (Foflonker et al.) This alga a high-productivity (34 g/m2/day), halotolerant species from the genus Picochlorum. This alga displays a short lag phase, rapid growth rate, high biomass productivity, and broad salinity (growth at 107.5 g/L salinity) and thermal tolerances (peak growth at 35°C). The biomass composition of this alga is rich in carbohydrates and protein (59.5% and 20% dry cell weight, respectively).
