Two varieties of the Lagenaria siceraria present in West Africa are an important crop in this region. One of these varieties is used primarily for its edible seeds that are popular with local people and the other is used for the hardness of the shell of the fruit that can be used as containers, musical instrument or decorative objects. Increased production and use of these cucurbits can result in food security and diversify small farmer s income . Otherwise, larger fruits of this species are found in the variety that is not consumed. There is thus a possibility to improve the edible variety for fruit size. As, characterization of genetic resources is crucial in any breeding program, this project turns out to be crucial for potential breeding programs related to this plant that has long been neglected by breeders
