Translating Policy into Practice: Community Insights on Just Transition in India’s Coal Regions-Evidence from Singrauli District

This dataset comprises primary household survey data collected from the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh, India, one of the country’s largest coal-producing regions. The study was designed to assess the extent of coal dependency among communities located within a 0–5 km and 5–10 km radius of two coal mines, which are expected to be scientifically close due to reserve depletion. The dataset includes household-level information on demographics, income, dependence on coal companies for infrastructure and services, and community aspirations following potential mine closures. In addition, the dataset contains an individual-level roster providing information on skills, income sources, livelihoods, and educational attainment. Overall, this dataset enables analysis of community aspirations, livelihood dependencies, and the role of local institutions in facilitating a Just Transition in India’s coal regions.
