资源简介:
Registers of newspaper recognizances and affidavits under the provisions of the Newspaper Act 1898, giving registered number, name of newspaper, proprietor, printer, date affidavit filed, date of recognizance, name of sureties and date recognizance filed. Volume I (4/7819) also contains a typescript history of and procedures for filing of documents relating to newspapers. Volume III, 4/7821, on pages 195-205 contains a "List of newspapers registered between 1841-84" which was transferred to the Registrar General's Department on 18 June 1929. This list appears to correspond to the newspapers registered in the Supreme Court, Prothonotary: Register of newspaper recognizances and affidavits (4/8237 part) which covers the period 1841-63. The registers, in volume form, ceased in 1963 and were superseded by the Alphabetical index cards of newspaper records (see series No. 13001). The Registrar General was given control over the registration of newspapers pursuant to the provisions of the Transfer of Records Act, 1923, which also provided that the records of the Prothonotary of the Supreme Court (who had previously administered the registration of newspapers) be transferred to the Registrar General's Department. Other documents relating to newspapers are also located in the records of the Colonial Secretary for the period 1827-49 when, under the Act 8 Geo. IV no.II (25 April 1827), the Colonial Secretary was responsible for these records. (4/7819-22). 4 vols. Note: This description is extracted from Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales, 3rd Edition 2000.
