Working Hours Study

The content of the study is two-part:

1. recording of actual temporal situation, length and distribution of
working hours for employees in the Federal Republic and

2. ideas and wishes about working hours.

Topics: 1. On actual working hours: weekly working hours; distribution
among the weekdays of time worked each week; working hours in the
course of the day; daily start of work and end of work; core working
hours and flextime; extent, reasons and compensation for overtime work;
frequency and forms of shift work; experiences with and length of shift
work up to now; frequency, extent and compensation of night work;
Sunday and holiday work; employment of spouse; extent of work of
working spouse; coordination of working hours between working partners;
commute times to work; primary means of transport on the way to work;
detailed recording of daily time budget.

2. Ideas and wishes about working hours: preferred time worked each
week with financial adjustment; ideal time worked each week;
inclination toward part-time work; ideas about the ideal number of
hours each week and situation of part-time work; desired type of
overtime compensation; interest in shift, night and holiday work;
attitude to flexible age limit.

Demography: age; sex; school education; occupation; occupational
position; area of business of company; household income; household
size; city size; state; union membership.
