This study focused on targeting and identifying the bacteria involved in the breakdown of the lignin-derived veratric acid, in the aquifer ecosystem of the Hainich CZE. We used DNA-SIP during incubations with labelled 13CO2 and labelled 13C-veratric acid, showing hotspots of veratric degradation in different zones of the aquifer.
