WORKFLOWS FOR NISAR DATA PROCESSING TO ADDRESS SOLID EARTH SCIENCE IMPLEMENTED ON THE ON-DEMAND CLOUD SYSTEM

In preparation for the launch of the NASA ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission in 2024, the NISAR Project Science Team is building workflows for each Science Team discipline (Ecosystems, Cryosphere, and Solid Earth), for the purpose of accommodating large data volumes and ensuring that the quality of the measurements collected by NISAR meets the requirements to address the scientific goals proposed for the mission. This paper will focus on the processing workflow for Solid Earth, addressing observations of coseismic, transient, and secular deformation. The workflow includes the use of standard NISAR %GeocodedGeo-coded Unwrapped (GUNW) Level-2 products, as well as the processing of Level-1 Single Look Complex images in Radar coordinates (RSLC) %products into additional Level-2, and subsequently Level-3, science products using the published Algorithm theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs). Each ATBD is available as a Python Jupyter Notebook and is currently implemented in an On-Demand JupyterHub environment. We test the workflow using JAXA ALOS-1 and ALOS-2 Single-Look %Complext Complex (SLC) data, which we convert to NISAR-like SLCs and process to simulate NISAR Level-2 GUNWs. We also provide the user with the option to create customizable networks of geocoded unwrapped interferograms using the ISCE-3 software (Rosen, 2012). The interferograms are used as inputs into each ATBD notebook, to produce Level-3 products and analyze the quality of the resulting measurements of deformation relative to the defined mission requirements. We use the Miami InSAR time series software in Python (MintPy) (Yunjun, 2019) to create the Level-3 deformation time series and velocity field products. We implement the described workflow on the NISAR on-demand cloud-based processing system. This workflow provides the Solid Earth focus group of the NISAR Science Team the tools to test their algorithms and prepare for calibration and validation of the real NISAR data after the NISAR launch.
