A current hypothesis of UC pathogenesis suggests that changes in the composition of the colonic microbiota, called dysbiosis, cause activation of the mucosal immune system resulting in chronic inflammation. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a therapeutic procedure aimed at restoring an altered intestinal microbiota by administrating fecal microorganisms from a healthy donor into the intestinal tract of a patient and thereby correcting dysbiosis.
