Open Access Levels Of Dutch Universities' Output 2016 (Articles & Reviews): Green, Gold, Hybrid And Bronze

Web of Science now includes information on Open Access (OA) availability of publications using article-level information from OADOI. This offers interesting possibilities to analyze OA developments at various levels - in this case Dutch universities. <br> See for example 'Open Access levels of Dutch universities 2010-2017' (Bosman 2017, DOI; 10.5281/zenodo.1120386) However, Web of Science currently labels all articles as gold OA that are detected as freely available from the publisher. No distinction is made between articles in gold open access journals, hybrid journals or subscription journals that make (some) articles freely available, but without a clear license for re-use (read-only). Such information is available through the OADOI API, though. This dataset uses detailed information available from the OADOI API to provide a breakdown of articles labeled as 'gold OA' in Web of Science. The following categories are distinguished (description taken from Piwowar at al., 2017, doi: 10.7287/peerj.preprints.3119v1) <strong>Gold</strong>: Published in an open-access journal (as defined by the DOAJ) <strong>Hybrid</strong>: Free under an open license in a toll-access journal <strong>Bronze</strong>: Free to read on the publisher page, but without a license Data for Dutch universities were collected from Web of Science using the organization-enhanced field. Only articles and reviews were included. The R script used to query the OADOI API and analyze the results is included in this dataset, as is the OADOI API output for each Dutch university's article subset (gold OA in WoS only). The dataset also includes summarized data and two charts generated from these data, showing levels and relative shares of the different types of OA, respectively. It is important to note that Web of Science includes information about green OA availability when either the accepted version (manuscript after peer review, but without publisher formatting) or the published version (with publisher formatting) can be retrieved from a repository. Submitted versions (author manuscript before peer review) are not included. This information is available from the OADOI API, but for this dataset, data on green OA data was used as provided by Web of Science.
