Spermatogenesis is generally highly conserved among vertebrates but shows variation in lower vertebrates. Inconsistencies between genetic sex and physiological sex accompanied by infertility are observed in mammals but are not clearly characterized in fish. We characterized spermatogenesis in Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), a species with environmental sex reversal, based on a high-resolution single-cell RNA-seq atlas of cells derived from male and pseudomale testes.
