Effective pedagogy can include numerous core principles. Open science provides many powerful tools that support, advance, and provide novel approaches to teach STEM in the classroom at all levels of instruction.
This table provides a short, qualitative description of teaching concepts examined and applied in the university classroom setting over the last 10 years of instruction. A total of 7 principles are proposed - each a fundamental element of the contemporary scientific process. Tools and applications are listed alongside benefits and challenges. Key citations to relevant readings and tested examples are also provided.
This list is not exhaustive nor representative of the wide diversity and scope of open science tools germane to teaching. It is meant as an instructive starting point or launchpad for innovation in teaching core science courses with open science as a supporting scaffold. Open science is thus the implicit knowledge communicated to learners not the primary content. This is purposeful because it shows that application of open science is viable to both teaching and to active learning needed in the sciences.
