Blood samples were collected from three horses (two Warmbloods and one Franches-Montagnes horse) owned by Swiss Institute of Equine Medicine (University of Bern and Agroscope) during routine examination. Serum was separated from cells during 20 minutes of centrifugation (1800g, room temperature) and 1 to 2 ml was used for RNA extraction with miRNeasy serum/plasma kit (Qiagen). The RNA was used for stranded small RNA library preparation (35 – 174 ng) with NEBNext Multiplex small RNA Library Prep Set for Illumina (BioLabs) and sequenced on MiSeq, Illumina (1 x 100bp). The adaptors were trimmed with cutadapt (v1.8).
