Pseudomonas nitroreducens TX1, a Gram-negative aerobic bacterium, efficiently grows on octylphenol polyethoxylates (OPEOn) as a sole carbon source. These nonionic surfactants are widely used for industrial, agricultural, and domestic applications. This study compares the growth, viability, and transcriptomic profiles of strain TX1 during the log phase when the organism is grown on minimal salts basal medium supplemented with 0.5% OPEOn versus 0.5% succinate. A total of 241 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, with 219 upregulated and 22 downregulated genes. This study presents the first comprehensive transcriptomic and functional analysis of a Gram-negative bacterium grown on nonionic surfactants. It provides a foundation for further studies to elucidate the mechanisms involved in nonionic surfactant catabolism and surfactant-induced stress responses.
