PROTECTION OF WOMEN VICTIMS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN ALTA VERAPAZ, GUATEMALA

The paper addresses the protection of women victims of sexual violence in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. It analyzes the situation at national and international levels, highlighting the implementation of specific laws such as the Law Against Femicide and the Law on Sexual Violence, Exploitation, and Trafficking in Persons. However, despite these legal advances, Guatemala faces significant challenges due to a deeply rooted machista culture and the lack of effective enforcement of these laws. The institutions responsible for law enforcement are often ineffective, and victims suffer re-victimization and lack of access to justice. The article emphasizes the need for a comprehensive institutional response, including the strengthening of the judicial system, adequate professional training, and the creation of awareness and prevention campaigns. It highlights the importance of inter-institutional collaboration and learning from international best practices to effectively address gender-based violence. Protecting women and promoting gender equality require a holistic and coordinated approach, involving both authorities and civil society to achieve significant and lasting change in the fight against sexual violence in Guatemala.
